MEALS ON WHEELS AMERICA ISSUES STATEMENT FOLLOWING THE 2024 ELECTION

Nov 06, 2024

Arlington, VA – Nov. 6, 2024 – Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander today issued the following statement regarding the 2024 election:

Meals on Wheels America is steadfast in our dedication to those older adults in our country who struggle with hunger and isolation, sadly growing epidemics which have not gotten the attention they deserve. We are committed to working with the new Administration and Congress to advance policies that will expand our reach and ensure that no senior in America is left hungry or isolated.

The fact of the matter is that America's older adults are in crisis. Nearly 13 million individuals 50 and older face food insecurity and one in three feels lonely. Rising costs, significantly growing need and funding shortfalls are forcing local Meals on Wheels providers to stretch their resources to the breaking point, placing vulnerable older Americans on waitlists for lifesaving meals, social connection and wellness checks. A recent survey of the Meals on Wheels network shows a worsening crisis, with 45% of programs currently reporting that they have a waitlist or intend to start one. These waitlists have an average length of 108 days and, in some cases, up to two years.

Meals on Wheels sets the gold standard as an evidence-based public-private partnership that effectively addresses the issues of senior hunger and isolation while providing a significant return on investment in the form of healthcare savings.

There’s much to be done, and we look forward to working with the new Administration and Congress to reach the promise of an America in which all seniors live nourished lives with independence and dignity. It's time to make the needs of older adults a top priority in our country.
