Meals on Wheels America Remains Vigilant after OMB Memo Freezing Federal Grants and Loans is Rescinded and Courts Delay Implementation

Jan 30, 2025

ARLINGTON, Va., January 30, 2025 – Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander today issued this statement regarding the rescinding of the freeze on federal grants and loans:

After much confusion and public outcry, the White House Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) memorandum issuing a freeze on federal grants and loans in all departments and agencies was halted by both the federal courts and rescinded by the administration. Though this is a short-term reprieve, we are concerned that threats to the Older Americans Act (OAA) Nutrition Program – the primary source of federal funding for Meals on Wheels – will continue to persist.

The fact of the matter is that Meals on Wheels is already underfunded and struggling to keep up with a growing senior population and rising costs. Every day, our network nourishes millions of vulnerable seniors not just with meals, but with essential moments of connection and care. These interactions are a lifeline for many older Americans, particularly those facing isolation or other challenges. It’s imperative to not only protect the OAA, but to also fully fund it.

The overwhelming public support we have received these past few days has been a powerful reminder of the immense impact and necessity of Meals on Wheels. And while we are encouraged by this, we cannot be complacent when the potential harm is so great. As such, Meals on Wheels America will continue to navigate through the limited information on how implementation of the order may or may not proceed.

We remain steadfast in our support of the powerful network of Meals on Wheels providers nationwide, fiercely advocating for, strengthening and uplifting them. We will continue to stand strong and fight against any threat to the vital funding that allows Meals on Wheels to serve those older adults who need it most.
